ANALOG Icos CONTROLLER BASED SHUNT ACTIVE FILTER FOR STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADS

Chapter 3 gives an account of the performance of adaptive shunt passive filter controlled by the ANN controller. Its performance was tested by simulation and experiments on 3 thyristor converter fed passive load. It was observed that the adaptive shunt passive filter provides the designed amount of reactive power compensation and filters the harmonic components. However, THD in source current is not reduced up to IEEE Standards. It indicates that adaptive shunt passive filter is not a desirable complete solution for filtering of harmonics. Hence to overcome its limitations, active filters are implemented on the test system. One of the promising algorithms, according to the author, is Icos algorithm [3, 4] which can be implemented using analog or digital controller. In this chapter, the effectiveness of analog controller working on Icos algorithm with shunt active filter is examined. G. Bhuvaneswari and Manjula G. Nair [3, 4] tried simulation and experimental verification of Icos algorithm with different nonlinear loads. The experiments were performed under balanced/unbalanced/distorted source/load conditions and it was reported that the algorithm operates satisfactorily to remove the source current harmonics. As an initial preparation for these studies, the author started with the similar loads as used by Bhuvaneswari, Manjula et al. but of different ratings. These results will be used for a comparative study with the filter configurations, proposed by the author.
